Hi all,

Condolences to Cantor Judy, who missed yesterday's concert to conduct a funeral for a friend.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mike Palmer, Jimmy's sister, Julia, and my sister, Melody.

The end of season party has been changed to May 19th. Jimmy will send out details.

If I don't see you at the party, have a wonderful summer.

Robin

[LAZC] Fwd: Please forward to Choir

LA Zimriyah,

First of all, it was wonderful to be a part of your dress rehearsal last night. I know the residents are going to be so moved by the material and all of your voices. We have never had anything like this at Fountainview before.

Reminders-

Only 3 have been approved for valet parking:

Keyboard – Cantor Judy Dubin-Aranoff

Step stools - Jimmy Weinberg

Music papers – Michael Palmer

For those 3, please pull your car up in the driveway in front of the building, bring your keys inside and check-in with Concierge.

Parking for everyone else is on Wilbur.

Please remember to show your pass when you come in. I have re-attached it to this email.

Please respect the instructions of the Concierge. It was brought to my attention that not everybody who was asked to wait in the lobby followed instructions. On Sunday, Concierge will ask you to go down to the theater in groups of 5 – 10. Please adhere to our protocol. There is always a reason for policies like this. It has to do with safety and also efficiency of not clogging up the elevator.

I have worked it out so I will be there by 2pm to monitor the audience. We have 65 signed up and 10 on the waiting list! WE ARE OFFICALLY AT FULL CAPACITY!

I am pretty sure you have already been told there is no space for guests, but a kind reminder that we are even turning away our own residents so there is absolutely no space for guests.

I will see you all on Sunday!

[LAZC] Visit with Leslie Barnard this evening

Good afternoon all-

FYI, the Orange County LAZC contingent (Sherri, Phyllis, Joyce and myself) will be visiting Leslie Barnard this evening after rehearsal at about 9:30. She is presently residing at:

the Country Villa Pavilion Nursing home

5916 West Pico Blvd., two blocks west of Fairfax Ave.

If you have the time, she would love a visit. I am extending this invitation as the nursing home is only 15 minutes from Sinai. It makes sense for us OC folks to take advantage of our proximity to the facility and stepping in on our way home tonight.

The facility's management has arranged for us to meet her in the Lobby of the home so as not to disturb the other patients.

I apologize for this last-minute request, however we were waiting to receive clearance from management to allow after-hours visitation.

Just "FYI" - you would be doing a great "mitzvah" to say step in and say hello.

Thanks for your consideration,

Mike

[LAZC] April 4, 2019

Hi all,

Rand said that tonight is Daniel Newman Lessler's last night for the

season, and is grateful for his service. Rina will be the accompanist

for the April 28th concert.

Happy Birthday to Hillary.

Congratulations to Bobbi's son, Avi.

Nick asked that you turn in your copy of Mack the Knife immediately

after the April 28th concert.

There are 2 more rehearsals before the next concert, on April 11th, at

Sinai Temple, and on April 23, at the Fountainview Jewish Home, on

Wilbur, in Reseda. The dress rehearsal on the 23rd will be downstairs,

in the movie theater.

Nick said that the concert last Sunday was very good. The audience

liked it, and the Mendel Mendelssohn soloists were terrific.

Rand said that we owe a debt of gratitude to Mike Palmer and Judy Bernstein.

The date of the end of year party will be determined soon.

Michelle said that Lynne Geminder sends her love, and that Harvey is

improving.

Leslie Barnard hopes to move to an apartment. She is looking for

caretakers, and would appreciate any referrals.

[LAZC] March 28, 2019

Hi all,

Barbara visited Judy Fenton today. She is totally herself. Her next

step is to get back to her apartment.

It is up to each person in the choir to decide if they want to wear a

kippah to the concert on Sunday.

Rand expressed his appreciation to Mike Palmer, who has worked to make

the concert this Sunday a success. There may be a smaller audience than

we would like, but the choir must still perform well.

There are only 3 rehearsals before the concert on April 28th.

Next week, there is a big event at Sinai Temple, and you most likely

wont be able to park in the garage.   Allow enough time to park on the

street and walk into the building.

[LAZC] Travel to OCJCC

Last night at rehearsal the subject of the Toll Road came up in our discussion of

travel to OCJCC. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO TAKE THE TOLL ROAD. IGNORE

ANY INSTRUCTIONS FROM WAZE TO THE CONTRARY. Take the 405 to CULVER

BLVD. AND EXIT. The OCJCC is right there. You can't miss it.

Rand

[LAZC] Thank You

Dear LAZC -

Thank you so much for your messages of concern and support and for the beautiful orchid plant that was delivered by Barbara Habermann.

I will be unable to put any weight on my foot for several weeks and am really unhappy about missing the last concerts of the season. Toi toi toi —. I’m sure you will be great. I plan to be back in the Fall.

[LAZC] March 13, 2019

Hi all,

Nick appreciates that choir members attend rehearsals and stay alert.

He asked that choir members pay attention to their voices as they change

over time, and to control their voices. He believes that there is

adequate time to polish the music.

Rand said that there are 3 more rehearsals before the concert on March

31st. There is one rehearsal on Thursday, next week, and then

rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday the week before the concert.

Call time for the concert is 2:00 p.m.

surgery is scheduled for next Wednesday. Barbara said that Judy sends

Hi all,

Thank you to Daniel for conducting the rehearsal in Nick's absence.

Rand found a blue sweater after the last rehearsal. Please let him know

if this is yours.

Rand is grateful for the choir members who are working to secure

performances and who are attempting to obtain grants.

There are 3 probable concerts next year, at Adat Ari El, Sinai Temple,

and Heritage Pointe, in Mission Viejo.

Choir members wont be allowed to bring guests to the concert on April 28th.

[LAZC] February 21, 2019

Hi all,

The dress rehearsal on the Tuesday before the concert in Irvine will be at Sinai Temple.

Rand thanked the new volunteers who have offered to help the choir, writing grants and soliciting performances. He asked that they get busy on the offers that they have made to help out.

There is a new committee, the Sunshine Committee, chaired by Barbara Haberman and Judy Bernstein. Their email addresses and the types of events to inform them of are in Rand's email, below. They will communicate this information to the choir.

I visited Leslie this week. She said that she'd been able to take a very few steps, with great support from her physical therapist. She is now able to make phone calls without someone holding the phone for her. She wants to be remembered by choir members.

Robin

[LAZC] February 14, 2019

Hi all,

I'm re-sending the music lists, with Nick's additions, for the final

concerts of the year.

Rand was enthusiastic about the response to his appeal for choir members

to volunteer.

There are a finite number of congregations in the general area that can

host the choir. They need to be contacted and recontacted regarding

hiring LAZC.

Rand knows that the choir will be successful.

Robin

[LAZC] Thanks for your support

I want to acknowledge and thank a number of people who have joined our volunteer corps of participants in response to my appeal. Thank you to Jane Cohen, Lynne Geminder, Michelle Hoisch, Marcy Lenard, Sherri Lipman, Nickie Godfrey, Judy Fenton, Danny Newman-Lessler,

and Ruthi Steinberg who join our long time group of volunteers Hillary Heyl, Leslie Cravitz, Robin Hoehler, Judy Bernstein, Tina Klein, Esther Rudis, Rachael Payne, Jimmy Weinberg, David West, Dorine Kramer, and Michael Palmer, all of whom have demonstrated their support and commitment to LAZC by agreeing to invest their time and energy in maintaining our great choir. Without their help, our choir could not continue to exist. Together they represent only half of the choir's membership.

There is still room for more volunteers, so if you haven't already joined the list, contact me now.

[LAZC] February 7, 2019

Hi all,

Rand didn't get any response to his invitation to choir members to help out. I'm re-sending his email with this, as he hopes to hear from people who are willing to help. There aren't any concerts booked for next year, and the choir is in jeopardy. Nick encouraged choir members to give their time.

I visited Leslie Barnard this week. She is now able to sit up, and drink from a straw in a cup, without the cup being held for her. She continues to face many challenges. Her phone number is 310 801 1350. Her roommate at the rehab center died, and she was asked if she wanted to be listed as next of kin on the death certificate…

[LAZC] My Dad Passed Away Today

Dear Friends,

The letter below is from Jimmy Weinberg advising us of the recent passing of his father, Larry Weinberg. Jimmy's dad, Larry was an ardent patriot, a brave soldier, a passionate supporter of the State of Israel, a generous philanthropist, a committed Jew and a leader in the Jewish community, an astute and ethical business man, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.

The funeral for Larry Weinberg will take place on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park in Simi, located at 6150 Mt. Sinai Drive, Simi Valley, CA

Further information concerning the location of the cemetery can be found on the mortuary website which is mountsinaiparks.org/parks/simi

Additional information will be distributed at our rehearsal at Sinai Temple on Thursday evening, January 3rd.

Please check your music files and bring with you to rehearsal Nick's composition, "Pitchu Li", which is part of a set of three psalm settings. If you have extra sets, please bring them.

Thanks and I will see you Thursday night.

[LAZC] My Dad Passed Away Today

Dear LAZC,

It is with great sadness that I wanted to share with you that my Father passed away this morning, January 1st, New Years Day. He was surrounded by his family at the time. In addition, his doctors had given him medication so that he was "comfortable" when he passed.

My Dad was one of those larger than life people. Whether in the real estate business, professional sports or in Jewish communal life, my Father leaves behind a remarkable legacy!

However, it is in his family that he found his greatest joy. My Dad would often tell anyone listening that marrying my mother almost 72 years ago made him the "luckiest man he knew!"

It seemed at times that my Father would live forever. However, as we all know, that isn't true for any of us. Please use his passing to remind you to hug your loved ones if they are close and call them if they are not. Sometimes life seems like it will go on without end. Don’t miss an opportunity to tell someone that you love/care for them.

With warmest regards,

Jimmy Weinberg

[LAZC] update on Leslie Barnard

Hi all,

I visited Leslie Barnard at Cedars Sinai this afternoon.

She is not sure if she'll need additional surgery, or how long she'll be

there.

She is happy to have visitors and/or phone calls.

She is in room 8905, South Tower, and can be reached on her cell phone:

[LAZC] Thank you

Dearest Rand and LAZC Members

Thank you so much for all of your thoughts and prayers and the beautiful floral arrangement you sent me during my convalescence.

Recovery has had a few challenges but I am definitely on the healing path! I’m sad that I missed our concert at Adat. The feedback has been overwhelmingly great!

I have missed only one other performance in my entire 15 yrs with the choir and that was when my son graduated from Brandeis in Boston. I truly had my goals set to be with you, but reality set in.

I wish the choir a joyous holiday season and look forward to joining you on January 3rd.

Fondly,

Judy

[LAZC] Calendar Correction

As many have already noticed, our next rehearsal on Thursday of this week will occur on December 6th, not 7th. Thanks to all who noticed.

A second message is to everyone regarding Judy Bernstein who underwent hip replacement surgery today at St. John's hospital in Santa Monica. She expects to be released to return home either Wednesday or Thursday and I am sure would appreciate your cards, e-mails or phone calls. Refuah Shlaima to Judy.

Rand

[LAZC] Congratulations

Greetings everyone,

To those who participated in our program last Friday evening at Sinai Temple, you are deserving of special kudos. We were handed several new pieces within the last week of our performance and you took it all in stride and performed superbly. I will try to make our hosts aware in the future that they must complete the selection of repertoire many weeks before performance in order for us to be able to master the music.

Special kudos to Nick for pulling the program together so well in such a short space of time.

Our rehearsals for the coming two weeks include Thursday night's regular rehearsal on December 7, our dress rehearsal at Adat Ari El on Tuesday night, December 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Sanctuary, a regular rehearsal on Thursday night, December 13 at Sinai Temple and a performance on Friday evening, December 14 at 8:00 p.m. with a call at 6:30 p.m. at Adat Ari El.

Our rehearsals for the next two weeks will focus on the Chichester Psalms which will be our most challenging piece. Please make sure to attend these rehearsals.

For those who wish to have dinner at Adat Ari El on December 14, the dinner call is 5:45 and the cost is $20 per person for singers and significant others. If you want a reservation for dinner, bring your check payable to Adat Ari El to our next rehearsal and hand it to Judy Aranoff.

No reservation and no check = no dinner.

Rand

The extra rehearsal, on November 27, may last past 9:00 pm.

Jimmy visited Leslie B. She sends her regards and hopes that she will not be forgotten. Michael added that she will be transported to another facility tomorrow. The name and address of the facility was not yet available.

Rand recognized those who were spared by the fire, those who were affected, and those who don't know if their house survived. On a personal note, my mother lost her family home in a fire when she was in first grade. No one was hurt, and that's always what's most important.

There won’t be a rehearsal next week. Enjoy your family and friends during the Thanksgiving holiday.

[LAZC] Our Collective Responsibility

Dear Friends,

As I mentioned last night at rehearsal, we are in need of additional singers,

especially women singers. Neither Leslie Cravitz nor I nor Nick is able to

accomplish the recruitment that we require without your active and conscientious

help. Please accept this reminder to reach out to those who you know who sing

and invite them to visit and/or to join LAZC. Everyone in the choir is a necessary

part of the recruitment process. LAZC depends upon you!

Rand

[LAZC] October 25th, 2018

Hi all,

Membership recruitment is critical to maintaining the choir. Rand is

focusing on getting new members. He would like you to help, reaching

out and talking to prospective choir members. He will advertise in the

Jewish Journal, inviting people to audition for the choir. LAZC has

lost 11 people since last choir season.

Be sure to bring any of the following pieces that you have to the next rehearsal:

1) Sharlin's Shalom Aleychem

2) Harlap's Psalm 96, Shiru L'adonai

3) Lewandowski's L'Cha Dodi and "Ma Towu"

4) Rossi's Barechu and Psalm 124

5) Taubman's Hashkivenu; and

6) Rothblum's Shalom Rav.

Robin

[LAZC] Thank you

Dear Friends,

I want to express to all of you my deepest appreciation

for the lovely gifts which you gave to me at rehearsal last

evening in recognition of my twenty "fearless" years of

leadership of LAZC. It has been my honor and pleasure

to have served as president of LAZC for these past years

and I am very proud of the many accomplishments of LAZC.

Although we can all look back upon over 120 concerts, several

overseas trips, numerous CD recordings and a lot of great

fun just being together, we can also look ahead with

anticipation to a number of achievements which still lie

before us.

Obviously I could not and did not manage LAZC alone.

Nick has always been a dear friend, a wonderful collaborator

and an outstanding conductor who has made all of our

achievements possible. Many of you have also contributed

with your time, energy, dedication and finances to the success of

LAZC, especially our tireless treasurer, Hillary Heyl who works

quietly and competently behind the scenes to manage our

financial affairs.

Thank you once again for your thoughtfulness.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rand

[LAZC] October 4, 2018

Hi all,

Leslie Barnard is improving. She enjoys the gym classes with her personal trainer (the physical therapist). She loves everyone in the choir to pieces, and was delighted to get the get-well card.

Bobbi asked that you keep her sister, Nancy Clark, in your prayers.

Leslie C said that you won’t get a parking pass this year. Just tell the guard for the garage that you are there for a choir rehearsal. She also asked for help in recruiting new choir members.

Rand explained that the choir needs to be run like a business. When you sign the membership application, you are signing a contract that you will attend choir rehearsals and concerts. Forty choir members are needed for a critical mass for a concert.

have a good week-

Robin

[LAZC] Nancy

Hello All,

Some of you know my sister, Nancy Clark. I drove her home from a 10-day hospital stay last evening. The malignancy was removed and she is glad to get home to her cat, Tosch, and away from frequent and various testing. She has chemo in the future, when she is healed, but right now is eager to watch all of the TV shows she tapes.

Please keep Nancy in your prayers. She is my big sister. If you would like to send her an email, use This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

More thanks than you can imagine,

Re: [LAZC] Leslie Barnard Update

Hi all,

I tried calling Leslie last night, and her voice mail box is full and not taking messages.

Perhaps the next person who visits her can help this situation.

Robin

[LAZC] Leslie Barnard Update

Hello LAZC,

I visited Leslie on Friday in the hospital. She is struggling a great deal, and the doctors say that "she is not out of the woods yet." Although her electrolytes and coherency have improved, the doctors cannot say for sure yet that she will pull through. Leslie's condition is quite severe. (Michael will have a more recent update for you on Thursday.)

We need to keep Leslie in our prayers for a healthy recovery.

Beyond prayers, please call her so that she can have human contact (be patient if she is unable to get a nurse to help answer her phone when you call. Just keep trying).

Thank you,

[LAZC] Welcome back..........

Hi all,

Rand welcomed Nate, the new accompanist this year.

Michael explained the new system for choir music. When you take a piece of music, you sign your name to a list. You will need to pay $3.00 for an additional copy.

If you have your copy of Chichester Psalms, please make sure that Michael removes your name from the list you signed tonight when you borrowed the copy from the USC music office.

Also, bring your copies of the following pieces to the next rehearsal:

Lewandowski's L'Cha Dodi and his Tzadik Katamar;

Janowski's Sim Shalom; and

Weill's Kiddush in G Minor.

Some of the music will overlap for the first two concerts this year, as the concerts are only 2 weeks apart.

There are only 4 concerts this year. Rand asked that you double your dues, or give what you can, to help with choir finances.

There is a new password for the Members Only Section of the LAZC website. This password can be obtained from Scott. Do not transmit this password on email.

The user name remains the same. The new password is to prevent the Members Only Section from being hacked.

Concert dates and venues are on the website.

Rand thanked Judy B for organizing a fantastic dinner/evening program in Calgary.

Scott talked to Leslie Barnard this afternoon. She is improving physically, and feeling lonely.

Scott asked that you check your contact information on the roster that he'll pass around. Please let him know if corrections are needed.

Leslie Cravitz is going to have parking passes to pass out next week.

Please let Leslie know if you won’t be attending a rehearsal. She doesn't want to worry about you.

Have a good week-

Robin

Update on Leslie Barnard

Dear LAZC family-

I thought an update on Leslie's condition would be appropriate. Linda and I just returned from visiting with her. Although she is in considerable pain and discomfort, her spirit is always informed by that very special: “Leslie's view toward the bright side”!

First: I hope all had a healthy and inspiring High Holiday season and that you all enjoyed summer events and restful “time off”.

Leslie had spinal surgery on September 14th to correct disc alignment and associated nerve canal issues. As of yesterday, September 21st, she was moved to an intensive rehab unit at Kindred Hospital in West Covina where she may remain for several days pending her recovery progress.

Her surgeon and associated medical team feel that she is making good progress toward recovery; more accurate prognosis will take time, however, as she is also suffering from the impact of the procedure's complex post-surgical complications.

Understandably, she would welcome any and all phone calls, encouraging texts and/or visits from her LAZC family as her recovery period is lengthy and difficult. Please know that her response will be limited, however.

She is looking forward to a new season with LAZC, however, this may be on hold pending the progress of her recovery. Her heart and spirit remain strong as ever; her love for the choir remains paramount in her life. She looks forward to rejoining her LAZC family as soon as practicable.

Here is her contact info and address:

Mobile: 310-801-1350

Kindred Hospital

845 North Lark Ellen Ave.

West Covina, CA 91791

Room 203-B

Please take a few minutes to text or call her.

Best regards and let's all wish her: “R'fua-Shleimah” (ah “Schneller Viederherstelling”)!

Mike

[LAZC] choir news

Hi all,

Leslie Barnard is expecting to go through another surgery on September 11th. The surgery will reverse problems in the neck/cervical spine (?) and prevent paralysis.

She is healthy and strong and would love to hear from you. Her phone number is 310 801 1350. I will forward her new email address as soon as she gets that to me.

She hopes to be back for the first rehearsal, on September 27th.

[LAZC] The Conquering Heros Return

Hi Everyone,

LAZC has returned from Calgary after a wonderful stay and outstanding concert. We enjoyed the beauty of Banff and Lake Louise and enjoyed a brief snow storm on Sulphur Mountain from the Banff Gondola, and the breathtaking beauty of the Canadian Rockies including Lake Louise. We will be creating a memory book with many photos to share.

At our hotel we conducted Shabbat services on Friday night and Saturday morning with many of our regulars assuming significant roles in both services. Judy Bernstein arranged a spectacular dinner for all of us at the hotel on Saturday evening followed by group singing around the piano expertly played by Danny Newman-Lessler. We also conducted our own Havdalah service late

in the evening as sundown falls in Calgary around 10:40 p.m. in the evening.

Nick conducted a rehearsal on Friday and on Sunday mornings at the hotel in a wonderful practice room provided by the hotel with a piano played by Danny and Rina.

Many had the opportunity to visit interesting points of interest in Calgary including Calgary Tower, Calgary Zoo, Heritage Park, and the Music Museum among others.

We had an outstanding concert and were received by two standing ovations. We have already been invited back for a future visit and the two other choirs were eager to visit us in Los Angeles.

We made many friends and visited family in Calgary and considered the trip a huge success.

Plans for next season are already underway with concerts planned for Adat Ari El, Sinai Temple and Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center already committed and additional venues still being pursued.

I wish everyone a restful summer and look forward to a new season which will begin in the fall after the High Holidays. Details of our first rehearsal for next season will be sent out in a future e-mail.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed time, effort, energy and financial support which made the past season possible.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rand

Thank you, everyone, for the kind words, kind deeds, great teamwork and sublime artistry! This concert was a dream come true for me and exceeded my wildest expectations. I will cherish the memory forever. Huge thanks to Cantor Russ and the wonderful people of Beth Tzedec, who made it all possible.

The CRSP Board is unanimously enthusiastic about the idea of a road trip to Los Angeles! And we do hope Spiritus will join in! It would be wonderful to reunite in song again with all our new and old friends!

With my very best wishes,

Marsha

Rand, it was a true pleasure and an honour for all of us to host you and the Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale this past week. You are a wonderful choir (with a fine conductor) and an absolutely delightful bunch of people! Thanks again to you and LAZC for making the trip to Calgary to participate in this very special concert collaboration.

And while we are on the subject of thanks:

Tim, thanks to you and Spiritus Chamber Choir for bringing your vocal talents to this concert production. It's always a pleasure to work with you! I look forward to the next collaboration.

Cantor Russ, you and your congregation were tremendous hosts --- generous, thoughtful and kind at every step in this process. It's been a treat to get to know you. We're so grateful for your warm hospitality and your enthusiastic support! It sounds like there is energy building at Beth Tzedec for an annual concert of Jewish arts and culture. We in Calgary will look forward to watching that energy grow and blossom into new, amazing community events!

Rand, the CRSP Board and I would be most delighted to bring the Renaissance Singers to Los Angeles at some future date. Thank you for that warm suggestion! And Tim, I do hope that Spiritus might be open to the possibility of participating in this most excellent California road trip.

With warm thanks to each and every one of you,

Jane

Subject: Grateful Thanks

Dear Friends,

Please accept the grateful thanks for the warmth, hospitality, and generosity shown by each of you in arranging for the Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale to appear and perform for you last Tuesday evening. As you know this was our first trip to Canada and we hope that it will not be our last. We enjoyed listening to your great music as much as we enjoyed performing our own for you.

We all arrived home safely Wednesday evening and could not stop commenting upon the many friends we made in Calgary and the very special way in which we were received.

We hope that this week will mark the beginning of a continuing relationship between our respective choirs. We hope that you could visit Los Angeles to sing for us in the future and we would be happy to show you the many sights of Southern California.

Fond personal wishes,

Rand Harris

[LAZC] Thank you!

Dear Rand, Nick, Danny and the Zimriyah Chorale,

Your thoughtful and beautiful message of concern and good health wishes for my daughter, Linda Goldman, were so kind and well received at the hospital last Monday during her surgery. The floral arrangement was gorgeous!

Linda and I are touched by your gift and take such great pleasure in telling you that she came through with flying colors and is looking forward to a wonderful full recovery.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all in the coming season for Zimriyah. I know that the Calgary Concert was a tremendous success and I'm excited to be able to sing with you all again in the future.

Warm and loving regards to you all,

Barbara Haberman

[LAZC] End of Season Party Reminder

Hi LAZC,

This is kind of a weird season, with some of us still meeting (we're leaving tomorrow for Calgary) and some not. I miss seeing everyone and I'm looking forward to seeing you at......

Our end of season potluck party is on Sunday, July 8 from 12-4 pm--this year it's on the Westside at my house.

Address: 3373 Patricia Ave, in Cheviot Hills. We are very close to the metro station at Palms/National if that's convenient for anyone.

It's only 3 weeks away, so be thinking about what you would like to bring for the potluck. No meat, poultry, or shellfish of any description as an ingredient, please. We stick to fish, dairy, and parev foods for the party. Categories are salads/side dishes, appetizers, main courses, and of course, desserts. We can reheat things if necessary. We will provide paper goods, cups, napkins, cutlery and drinks.

You are welcome to swim if you wish. There will not be a lifeguard.

We have a piano, and since it's us, singing is pretty much a given!

I will be away for the next week in Canada so I'm more likely to see your emails if you respond after June 20, when I can start keeping up with my inbox again.

Happy Summer!

Dorine

[LAZC] Bookings for next season

Hi everyone,

Every May and June I begin a process of soliciting bookings for LAZC for the coming season. Unfortunately for me, I am already fully engaged in the planning of the Calgary trip which has been occupying a good deal of my time since last June. I would really appreciate help from devoted LAZC members willing to assist in seeking concert bookings for next season. Our bookings are our life blood and the only way that we are able to sustain ourselves financially. If you are willing to spend some volunteer time contacting local synagogues, churches or other organizations that I will identify for you with materials that I will provide to you in order to solicit concert bookings for LAZC for next season, please contact me.

Thank you,

Rand

[LAZC] New grandchild

Dear friends,

Last Friday my daughter Elizabeth delivered my first grandchild, James David Predergast. Don't know whether he's a tenor or a bass yet.

All the best,

[LAZC] April 26, 2018

Hi all,

The concert on May 9th at Sinai Temple has been cancelled. The concert may be rescheduled for the fall.

If you are going to Calgary, you will continue to rehearse each Thursday, starting next week, through the trip to Calgary.

If you are not going to Calgary, this is your last rehearsal for the season. You cannot attend rehearsals after tonight, or participate in the concert in Tustin.

The next choir season, for all choir members, will start on September 27th.

The choir party is scheduled for July 8th. All choir members are invited.

If you are attending the Saturday night buffet in Calgary, please bring your check for $40.00/person to Judy Bernstein by May 17th.

Rand sent a payment schedule to those who are going to Calgary.

Nick said that the choir had a good year.

Rand thanked the choir for a fabulous year.

Robin

[LAZC] April 19, 2018

Hi all,

Please bring your copy of Lewandowski's Halleluyaw, in case an encore is needed at the May 9th concert.

Rand has sent itemized bills to those going on the trip to Calgary. He said that the trip looks marvelous.

[LAZC] Translations

All - If you are not familiar with Hebrew, the attached PDF may be of use. It is a word-by-word translation to English of the transliterated Hebrew words for (most of) the songs in our next performance. Corrections appreciated and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.

Thank you – Eric

Dear Choir:

If you are not familiar with Hebrew liturgy, here is a tool you can use.

The following pages hold transliterated text from our next concert.

Each verse of transliterated Hebrew uses boldface font.

Translation to English appears below it in regular font.

Translation is word-for-word, in hopes of helping you apply

meaning and feeling to whatever group of syllables you want to analyze.

So the translation may appear stilted as it tried to cope with

1) Hebrew word order: For example, adjectives follow nouns, and frequently the subject of a sentence follows its verb.

2) Hebrew word structure: Conjunctions, definite articles, prepositions, and pronouns are packed into the noun or verb they modify.

For example,

Bi-sh'-lo-me-kha is a composite of bi (with) + shalom (peace) + e-kha (yours)

Ba-r'kh-einu is Baruch (bless) + einu (to us)

I hope this of help. For me personally it was a fun exercise in capturing text from the internet and macro-writing.

Corrections appreciated; likewise comments or questions.

Your Invitation

Dear Friends,

Please join me at the Kol Ami Spring Spectacular, to be held on May 7, 2018 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, as we celebrate the work we have accomplished together. I am thrilled to be named the 2018 Spirit of Kol Ami honoree. It is an immense honor to be recognized for my commitment to our congregation.

My relationship to the Kol Ami has grown and deepened over the 13 years since I became a member, through the many opportunities I’ve had participate in strengthening our community. It has been a privilege to serve in so many ways, as a member of the Board of Trustees, co-leading a Shabbaton, creating programs for Adult Education, spearheading membership recruitment, and helping to develop valuable outreach through the Mitzvah Corps.

Please join me and my fellow Shomer Tzedek “Guardian of Justice” honoree, Alan Bernstein, for a wonderful evening of friendship and celebrating our inclusive and warm Reform congregation, dedicated to social justice and Jewish values.

Please consider supporting Kol Ami at whatever donation amount is meaningful to you. I look forward to sharing this honor with you.

Hi all,

Choir rehearsals resume this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Sinai Temple.

Leslie Barnard has been back to a rehab, with a small refrigerator in her room. Her doctor believes that eating "real food" will help her continue to improve. If you go to visit her, you can call to ask what food she is thinking about that you could bring to her.

[LAZC] Avi Jacobsen's L.A. County Firefighter graduation

Dear Friends and Family,

On Friday, March 30, my son, Avi Jacobsen, will graduate from the L.A. County Firefighter Academy. Getting a Public Safety position has been a five-year process for him, with numerous civil service tests, interviews, physical abilities tests and the EMT. It's not unusual for 10,000 people apply for 300 openings. Kinda like Hollywood. So... I am hoping to get many, many folks to send him the hearty congratulations that he deserves. Best case scenario is that you send him an email at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, when the ceremony is over and the hats are in the air. I would love for him to get a lot of email at that moment! We can look at them a lunch. But later than that is okay, since I realize that the holidays are upon us. Please let him know how you know me, if he will not know who you are, and feel free to ask others to send similar wishes.

Thanks!

Bobbi Jacobsen

[LAZC] March 22, 2018

Hi all,

There aren't any rehearsals for the next 2 weeks, on March 29th or April 5th.

Nick asked that you look at your music during this time, especially Sim Shalom and Psalm 42 from A Psalm Trilogy.

Cantor Judy has flyers for a concert of Persian instrumental music on Sunday, April 29th, at 4 p.m. The concert is free. The Wine, Cheese and Artist Reception, at 3 p.m., is $15.00.

Leslie C. still has a few shirts left with the choir logo.

Michael Palmer gave an update on Leslie B. Her pneumonia improved enough that she was able to go through surgery on Tuesday. The operation was successful. They are still trying to eradicate her infection.

Leslie had mentioned to me that she does not feel alone because of the support that she gets from the choir.

[LAZC] A Visit by Carol Zimring

On Thursday evening, March 22, our travel agent for our upcoming Calgary trip, Carol Zimring, will be visiting us for a brief time before and during our break. She will answer general questions which affect the entire group during our group time and will answer specific individual questions during break.

I will be bringing the lists of those who will be joining our group air flights, our hotel shuttle bus transportation, our hotel reservations, and our Banff/Lake Louise tour bus transportation for any of those seeking to confirm their participation. I will also bring a copy of our daily agenda and itinerary for those who do not already have it.

Carol is still in the process of negotiations and completion of reservations with several of our vendors and will not be able to provide final figures on Thursday evening. Please prepare your questions in advance to save valuable rehearsal time. For additional questions or advice, you may contact Carol directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. [LAZC] Last night's concert and coming events

Congratulations to everyone who participated in last night’s program at Temple Emanuel. It was a very challenging program and was executed by LAZC with exceptional conscientiousness, precision and effort. The rabbi, cantor, and congregants in attendance, as well as Samuel Adler himself, were lavish in their praise of our performance--one of our really outstanding concert performances ever.

The concert was tinged with bittersweet overtones as we all were focused upon the very serious medical condition of Leslie Barnard. She was, and she will remain, in our thoughts and prayers in the coming days and weeks. Michael Palmer has been monitoring her condition on a daily basis and I hope that he will keep us informed of any new developments.

We will be meeting for rehearsal on Thursday evening, March 22 as usual. REHEARSAL WILL BE CANCELLED ON THURSDAY EVENING, MARCH 29 IN ANTICIPATION OF PESACH SEDER ON MARCH 30. REHEARSAL WILL ALSO BE CANCELLED ON APRIL 5 WHICH IS A YOM TOV AS THE SEVENTH NIGHT OF PESACH.

Following Pesach our rehearsal schedule will resume on Thursday evenings in preparation for our concert at Sinai Temple on Wednesday, May 9th. Since our preparations for the Sinai Concert will be abbreviated by observance of Pesach, each rehearsal becomes extremely important and your attendance is critical.

See you next Thursday.

Hi all,

Please remember to not wear anything scented to rehearsals or to concerts/services/performances.

Please bring your copy of Adler's "An Invitation and a Blessing" to next week's rehearsal.

Nick got good reports about the concert last Friday.

Cantor Judy thanked Judy Bernstein for organizing the Shabbat dinner. She thanked Danny and Rina for playing and conducting. And she thanked the choir for the Erev Shabbat concert/service. Everything sounded great.

Temple Ramat Zion is a new venue. Rand said the choir tries to add a new venue or two each year, with the hope of getting invited back.

The next concert/service, is on March 16th at Temple Emanuel. This is a celebration of Samuel Adler's 90th birthday and also Rabbi Aaron's daughter's bat mitzvah.

The program will include Adler's music: Hashkiveinu, L'Chah Dodi, An Invitation and a Blessing.

[LAZC] Final Call for Calgary

Tomorrow is the final day to submit your deposit of $800 in order to participate in our Calgary trip. As of Sunday, January 14th, only 14 singers and 8 significant others had submitted their deposits of $800 or more toward the trip. That means that 19 individuals who had committed in writing to join the trip still need to submit their deposits by tomorrow in order to reserve a room at the hotel and a seat on the airplane. Any shortfall in enrollments will jeopardize the viability of the trip for all of the rest.

We have a total of 10 ringers plus 14 regular LAZC members who have paid their deposits but we need a total of 40 singers in order to perform in Calgary. Many of us have worked very hard for many months to arrange this trip and it promises to be a very exciting and enjoyable trip for those who participate. If you have not yet given your deposit, please do tomorrow without fail.

Hillary will be accepting checks tomorrow at rehearsal.

If you plan to make such a contribution, please be sure to do so as soon as possible so that people in need of assistance can make plans accordingly

We will depart for our tour on June the 13th, and we will return from the tour on JUne the 20th. Our concert is scheduled for June the 19th. As part of our tour, we will have a tour by charter bus of Banf. We are planning a Kaballat Shabbat, dinner, and Shabbat morning services in the Hotel during the tour.

[LAZC] Starting the New Year Off Right

 Dear Friends,

This June many of your friends and colleagues will be traveling off to Calgary to participate in a long-awaited concert engagement. We have been planning and eagerly awaiting this trip for many months. A few of our valued members have applied for financial assistance to make the trip to Calgary and Hillary and I would like to honor their requests with partial scholarships. In order for us to be able to help these members, we need your help.

A contribution to LAZC in any amount will assist us in being able to award partial scholarships to several worthy applicants. In the best Jewish tradition, Hillary and I will keep the names of the donors and the donees strictly confidential.

Start off the New Year with a great mitzvah by helping your friends and helping LAZC at the same time. You can deliver your check made payable to LAZC to Hillary or to me at our next rehearsal or you can mail your check to Hillary at 1990 Westwood Blvd., Suite 100, Los Angeles, CA 90025-4673.

Thank you and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.

[LAZC] Calgary Participants Payment Instructions

We have received notice from our Calgary hotel, the Delta Marriott, that they require a room commitment from us by no later than January 22, 2018 in order to hold the rooms and the room rate which has been negotiated by our travel agent, Carol Zimring.

Based upon that notification, we must therefore require that all of those who will be participating in the Calgary trip make an initial deposit of $800 per person, which is estimated to be approximately one-half of the group cost per person by no later than our rehearsal on Thursday, January 18, 2018.  If you have already made a partial deposit, your partial deposit will be deducted from the total deposit requirement of $800 per person which is due by January 18, 2018. Your check should be made payable to LAZC. If, for any reason, you cannot pay the first installment by January 18, 2018, you must notify Rand or Hillary in writing to obtain permission to obtain a variance.

Failure to notify Rand or Hillary may result in the inability of LAZC to obtain a a room reservation for you.

If you would like to obtain travel cancellation insurance, Carol Zimring (cpztravel @gmail.com) can help you and, you will need to apply for that insurance

within 14 days after making your deposit, in order to obtain a pre-existing conditions waiver from the travel cancellation insurance company.

The second installment, which will also be an estimated $800 per person, will be due and payable no later than May 1, 2018. The exact balance due on the

second installment will need to be calculated after we know exactly how many individuals and their significant others will be making the trip and may vary slightly from the amount of $800 per person.

In the event any person, who has made a deposit payment, is unable to participate In the trip and notifies, in writing, Rand or Hillary, before May 1, 2018, LAZC will refund the previous deposit made less the sum of $100 per person for each cancellation.  Any cancellations submitted on or after May 1, 2018 will not result in any refunds from LAZC, although you may be eligible for a refund from the trip cancellation insurance company depending upon whether or not you have a trip cancellation insurance policy and whether or not your reason for cancellation is covered under the terms of that policy.  Our last rehearsal before May 1, 2018 will take place on April 26, 2018. You can deliver your second installment payment to Hillary in person on April 26, 2018 at rehearsal or by mail to her office before May 1, 2018 at 1990 Westwood Blvd., Suite 100, Los Angeles, CA 90025.

LAZC is making all flight, hotel and ground transportation arrangements and all charges are the actual charges incurred by LAZC which does not intend to incur any profit or loss on the cost of the trip.

[LAZC] update on Leslie Barnard

Hi all, Leslie is scheduled to have another surgery this Thursday.

Her phone number is on the roster, if you would like to talk with her before, or after, the surgery. She truly appreciates every contact from choir members that she receives. Her doctors have suggested that home made chicken soup will help her. If you can make some and deliver this to her, please call to find out about a broth that helps her, and where she will be for delivery.

Also, I talked to Filomena Krambo, from the Southern California Choral Society. She did not lose her home from the fire in Ventura. However, her son died, at age 51, earlier this year.

[LAZC] Rehearsal on December 7

 Dear Friends,

After consulting with the Executive Director of Sinai Temple, Howard Lesner, I have confirmed that Sinai Temple will be open tomorrow evening and our regularly scheduled rehearsal in preparation for our concert on Friday evening can proceed as planned.

Those who will be commuting to Sinai Temple from far distances should allow extra time for their commute. If you are coming in from the San Fernando Valley, I recommend that you avoid the 405 freeway and Sepulveda Blvd. entirely. Alternate routes include Beverly Glen, Coldwater Canyon and Laurel Canyon Blvds. Drive carefully and safely.

Rand

[LAZC] A Guide For the Perplexed (With Apologies to Maimonidies)

If you are new to LAZC or are still debating whether or not to join the group tour to Calgary next June, read on...

The tour will be leaving from LAX on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 for Calgary. We will arrive at Calgary airport where we will be met by a bus to transport us to the Delta Marriott Hotel in Southeast Calgary, (www.http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/yycdc-delta-hotels-calgary-south/) where we will be staying until June 20, 2018. As you can see from its website, the hotel is well equipped for our comfort and enjoyment with four restaurants, a swimming pool, a business center, a fitness center, conference rooms with a piano available for rehearsal purposes, free wi-fi internet, and a small refrigerator in every room. There are also many fine local restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel. Calgary also has a number of kosher restaurants. Our outstanding travel agent, Carol Zimring, (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) successfully negotiated a group rate at the hotel which amounts to $67 per person per night, double occupancy including local taxes and daily breakfasts. Each individual will be responsible for the cost of his or her own lunch and dinner expenses daily. If you wish to have a single occupancy room, check with Carol for the applicable rate. Our hotel is located approximately 3 miles from Temple Beth Tsedec where we will be performing on June 19. All reservations for air travel and hotel accommodations are being made exclusively by Carol unless you do not plan to travel or stay with the group. In that event you should still contact Carol and advise her of your plans. You will need a valid U. S. passport which does not expire within 6 months of our expected return date in order to travel to Canada.

There will be a limited number of opportunities for individuals or couples to stay with local residents in Calgary for "home hospitality" instead of staying in the hotel. We have been advised by the cantor at Temple Beth Tsedec that he is able to arrange for a limited number of visitors to be housed in the homes of observant families with kosher homes within close walking distance to the synagogue. Please advise me if this opportunity appeals to you. The cost for those receiving home hospitality will be reduced over the cost for those staying in the hotel.

On Thursday, June 14, which will be one of our leisure days, we are planning to hire a tour bus to take those who wish to view the picturesque Canadian Rockies which includes the opportunity to visit Banff and Lake Louise which are located about 1 hour away from our hotel. There will be a small charge for the tour bus of approximately $35 per person. You will have an opportunity to walk around the town of Banff and visit its many of its points of interest and shops including the world famous, Banff Springs Hotel. The bus will then take us to Lake Louise to take in a view of the lake, the nearby glaciers, and, of course, the luxurious, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Hotel. Many shops and restaurants are readily accessible in both Banff and Lake Louise. You will have an opportunity to spend the day and early evening including dinner in either of these picturesque towns. For more information about Banff and Lake Louise see www.banfflakelouise.com

Friday night, June 15, we will usher in Shabbat with our own informal Kabbalat Shabbat service at the hotel where we will have the opportunity to sing together much of the Friday evening liturgy we have learned and performed at many synagogues throughout Southern California. Sundown in Calgary actually begins in mid-June at around 9:30 p.m. I will be asking Michael Palmer to bring with him the sheet music for some of our favorite Friday evening melodies for group singing.

Saturday morning, under the capable leadership of Cantor Judy Dubin Aranoff, we will offer Shabbat morning services at the hotel with many of our own members invited to participate and lead portions of the service. Judy will attempt to obtain from a local synagogue, siddurim and a Torah scroll. Those who wish may remain at the hotel for the remainder of Shabbat and those who prefer may sightsee in and around Calgary. On Saturday evening, a optional prepaid vegetarian and/or fish dinner will be served for those who sign up in advance. Shabbat does not end until about 10:30 p.m.

Sunday, June 17 will be mostly a free day although Nick may wish to reserve some time for a rehearsal at the hotel. Monday evening, June 18 is scheduled for a joint rehearsal at Temple Beth Tsedec with the two other choirs with which we will be performing on Tuesday evening. One of those choirs is our host, the Calgary Renaissance Singers and Players, and I believe that the other choir is the choir of Temple Beth Tsedec.

Tuesday evening, June 19 is the big concert at Temple Beth Tsedec in the evening. All three choirs will perform separately and then join together at the end for a finale piece conducted by Nick. The sanctuary at Temple Beth Tsedec will hold an audience of 1500.

On Wednesday, we will be taken by bus to the Calgary airport where we will board a plane for our return flight to Los Angeles.

 Financial details

All of the group costs of the trip including airfare, hotel accommodations, group ground transportation, and any miscellaneous costs will be divided equally among the members of LAZC and their significant others. LAZC does not intend to generate any profit (or incur any loss) from this trip. Based upon costs previously researched by our travel agent, it appears that the total cost of the trip for those staying in the hotel, excluding meal expenses for lunches and dinners, will be approximately $1600 based upon an anticipated participation of approximately 45 contributing individuals. Currently 45 individuals have indicated their intention of participating on this trip plus 9 ringers, accompanists, and conductor for a total group as of this date of 54 individuals. In addition to the costs for airfare, hotel, and group ground transportation the cost for each LAZC member and significant other will include the cost for the hiring of 8 ringers which is being significantly reduced by a generous contribution of $10,000 from our hosts in Calgary. The incremental cost for ringers is included in the $1600 cost estimate contained above and will not exceed $100 per person, probably much less depending upon the number of participants. The final date for enrolling in the trip is February 28th 2018 at which time one half of the total sum of $1600 shall be due and payable. The balance of $800 or whatever other amount shall be determined to be needed shall be due and payable by May 1, 2018. All payments shall be made payable to LAZC. A limited number of partial scholarships will be available by filling out and returning to Hillary the Financial Assistance Form which has been prepared for this trip.

We have been advised by expert tax counsel that under existing provisions of the Internal Revenue Code, that the expenses incurred by each volunteer singer in connection with this trip are tax deductible as a charitable expense based upon the fact that LAZC is a fully qualified 501(c)3 non profit corporation. However, as you all know, there is currently pending a proposed Tax Reform Bill in Congress which may change the deductability of the costs of this trip in the coming year. Check with your own tax advisor for advice as to any changes which may affect you in the coming year. Those who can afford to do so are encouraged to pay their trip costs in calendar year 2017 to LAZC. Hillary will be accepting your checks. All costs quoted are in U. S. dollars and have been adjusted based upon a current rate of exchange of approximately $.78 U. S. for each Canadian dollar.

If you have any further questions or comments, feel free to contact me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or Hillary (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or Carol Zimring (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Hoping that you will be joining us, Shabbat Shalom,

Rand

[LAZC] Thanks for your support

In the spirit of this Thanksgiving season and on this Giving Tuesday, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have paid their LAZC Membership Dues and to  express a special thanks to those who have contributed additional payments to LAZC over and above the basic dues amount.  A record number of LAZC members have made substantial donations to LAZC over and above the dues requirement.  It is very moving and gratifying to me to see in very concrete terms the devotion and dedication of so many to the organization which we all believe in and support.

Todah Rabbah,

Rand

A few people have not yet paid their annual membership dues of $250.00 and have not yet applied for financial assistance.

November 16 is the final date for payment of annual membership dues.  If dues are not paid or an application for financial assistance is not received by November 16, a person will not be eligible to attend rehearsals, performances or to participate in the Calgary concert trip.  Please make sure that you are paid up so that you can enjoy all of the benefits of membership in the greatest Jewish choir on the planet!

[LAZC] November 9th, 2017

Hi all, Please contact Tina and Arnie Klein if you would like to go to their home for Thanksgiving. Sharon Farber will give a lecture on music at the Doheny Library at USC on Thursday, December 7th, at 2 p.m. Debra and Esther Rudis  have been in contact with Leslie Barnard.  She has had some setbacks, and would appreciate phone calls from choir members, on a regular basis. Condolences go to Esther Fisher on the loss of her mother. Cantor Judy gave Scott a copy of the flyer for the December 8th concert to email to you.   She will collect checks for payment for the dinner in a week or so.  Dinner for choir members is $18 and $23 for non-choir members. Rand said that  the concert in Edmunton is cancelled, so the time frame for the trip shifted back to June 13th-June 20th.   There is no longer a discount for signing up early.  Please give your check for the $250 deposit for the trip to Hillary as soon as possible. have a good week- Robin

[LAZC] LAZC Choir: BIG Announcements from Last Thursday!

Many new and exciting developments were announced at last Thursday's meeting:

•  LAZC's schedule of concert dates for the 2017-2018 season was passed out; Pick up a copy at the next rehearsal if you did not get one. Add June 24th to it (see below).

•  Email Leslie if you are going to miss rehearsal, instead of telling her in person.

•  Leslie Barnard is staying at the Beverly Hills Rehabilitation Center for a month. Visiting hours are from 10AM – 8PM. Access the visitor parking lot by heading northbound on San Vicente, which has a central divider. Address:

580 S. San Vicente Blvd., L.A. 90048 (cross street is 6th Street, near Wilshire)

Website: http://www.rehabcentre.com/pages/philosophy/philolosophy.html

•  Nick announced that Aaron Harlop is not coming from Israel. Instead, the choir will perform two pieces by Sharon Farber.

•  Free CD copies were provided by Dick Braun from LAZC's 1st Interfaith program, when LAZC sang "Go Eat Your Bread." Ask Rand for a copy; if none are left, Rachael has an extra copy.

•  Trip to Calgary - New Developments:

- Trip dates may change to leave L.A. on Sunday, June 17th, returning Monday, June 25th, due to Edmonton concert added (see below).

-  Rand negotiated a second concert gig for the trip, this one in Edmonton on June 24th, at a hotel in the West Edmonton Mall, with a kosher kitchen and is the largest mall in North America. More details below.*

-  Due to Rand securing $14K in fees for the trip's concert, the trip cost will lower a few hundred dollars from what Rand originally quoted. The fees now cover all ringers, our Director, etc. The actual cost of the trip will not be known until Feb. 1st. Rand said that it will be a few hundred lower than his original estimate of $2500-$2600.

-  Rand consulted a non-profit corporate tax lawyer, who said the trip for singers is tax deductible.

-  Applications are available at the choir rehearsals. Please only sign and submit them if you are able to hand Hillary a check along with submitting the form.

* Edmonton performance is for a Testimonial Dinner for the Jewish National Fund. Choir will receive its full fee for the 25-minute concert during the dinner. Many questions were asked that are still TBD, including where the choir would spend Shabbat on the 23rd.

A HUGE thank you to Rand for all of his time securing all these concerts and fees and putting together a promising trip to remember!!

See you all next Thursday!

Rachael

[LAZC] Chamber music concert Sunday, May 21

Fellow LAZC-niks, if we don't have sectional rehearsals on the 21st, I invite you to a chamber music concert I'm producing in the Valley. As you see from the attached flier, a woodwind quintet will perform a marvelous program of Farkas, Taffanel and Nielsen. It's free; there will be food; what more could you ask for?

All the best,

Paul Kujawsky

[LAZC] Sectionals this Sunday

Hello LAZC,

Thank you for a productive, and dare I say, fun rehearsal tonight.  I am grateful to how much effort you are putting into this project.  Stay determined.  We still have work to do, but we are well on our way.

We will be having men's and women's sectionals this Sunday.  This is the last opportunity to prepare this music before Dr. Strimple's return, so please, do your best to be there.  If you cannot be there, please take the time to practice your music between now and next Thursday.

Ladies, Rina is in the process of moving, so you are stuck with me.  Please review Gurrelieder and Mein Herz in staten treune.  This will be our main focus.

Men, we will continue our work on Zeisl's Be Merciful Unto Me Oh God, so please practice with the tracks sent out before we meet on Sunday.  We will also go into Gurrelieder if there is time.

That's all for now, folks!  See below for sectional information.

Sincerely, Daniel

Women's Sectional: Sunday May 7, 10 Doreen Kramer 3373 Patricia Ave. LA, 90064

Men's Sectional: Sunday, May 7, 1-4pm Firoza Jhabvala's home 1127 South Dunsmuir Ave. Los Angeles, 90019

Daniel Newman-Lessler

[LAZC] May 4, 2017

Hi all,

Daniel will send emails with information for sectional rehearsals on Sunday.

The men will meet at Firoza's home, and the women at Dorine's home.

The rehearsal at Dorine's is from 10:00 a.m. until noon.

Daniel thanked the choir for their team effort, patience, and hard work in preparing for this concert.

He suggested writing in counts, reading the translation, coming to sectionals, and getting some rest.

Sweet dreams-

Robin

MEN'S SECTIONAL APRIL 30!

Hello mighty men of Zimriyah,

We will have a sectional rehearsal this Sunday, April 30 from 2-6pm (maybe ending earlier) at Eric Isenberg's home.  His address is 6120 Huntdale Street, Long Beach CA 90808 and his phone number is 562-477-1796 in case you get lost.

We will mostly focus on Zeisl's Be Merciful Unto Me, Oh God, but we will definitely touch everything on the program.

See you this Thursday for what I am certain will be a great rehearsal.  Keep practicing with the tracks that I've sent you.  Keep checking your email for more tracks from Rina.

Best, Daniel

Re: [LAZC] Re: Choir Study Materials and Letter to the Choir

Rina,

This may work for the women's sectional.  Please follow through with Judy.

Best, Daniel

[LAZC] Re: Choir Study Materials and Letter to the Choir

Even though I am retired, I would love to volunteer my living room with my piano for rehearsals, other than this Thursday and Friday, when I will be out of town.

Warmly, Judy S. Dubin

Choir Study Materials and Letter to the Choir

Dear LAZC family,

First and foremost, thank you all for hanging in there yesterday.  It was tough, but we stayed productive and got a good start to some hard rep.  I think that as the rehearsal went on, I began to realize how monumental of a task we have on our hands.  As that happened, I grew more and more tense.  For that, I apologize.  But you all stayed positive, and put in great work.  Thank you for that.  After speaking with Dr. Strimple last night via email, we have a game plan to make this a great concert.  Please read everything below.  Here we go.

1) Practice with recordings: Rina and I will be making recordings over the next few days of every part on every piece.  So please check your emails and practice along with your parts. Right now, you should be receiving Jakobsleiter (Choir II) and To Her I Shall Be Faithful.  Remember, the verses are strophic.  So practice each verse with the piano track.   I'm rushing to get these to you, so you might hear me correct myself on the recordings.  Whoops :)

2) Sectionals: In order to have the choir running like a well-tuned machine when Dr. Strimple gets back, the men and women need to meet separately outside our normal Thursday rehearsal.  These rehearsals need to take place at the home of an LAZC member with a piano.  These sectionals should be every week for two hours.  The men may need to meet for three hours since we have more rep.  We need people willing to volunteer there homes, and we need to come to a consensus of when to rehearse.  Please let us know ASAP if you are willing to host.  You will be receiving a poll to indicate when you are able to rehearse in sectionals.  Stay tuned, check your emails.

3) Efficient use of rehearsal: I'll keep it simple: we need to start on time, we need to end break on time, we need to keep announcements to only the essentials. I realize the announcements are important.  At least until after the Schoenberg concert, please advertise your events in emails to the group rather than during rehearsal time. I apologize if this steps on any toes.  I will be cutting out warmups from rehearsal to make sure we squeeze in every minute we can.  Please arrive warmed up and ready to go.

4) Delegate pieces to ringers: We are no longer responsible for a fourth folksong that Randy Schoenberg had added, and the men of LAZC are no longer responsible for A Survivor from Warsaw.

HERE IS A LIST OF REPERTOIRE WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR.  Please bring this music to rehearsal.

Three Folksongs

Now May Has Come With Gladness (German)

To Her I Shall Be Faithful (German)

     Schein uns, du liebe Sonne

Gurrelieder (I will make more copies)

     Jakobsleiter

Be merciful unto me, oh God! (Zeisl, English)

An Invitation and a Blessing (Adler)

I know this is a lot to learn.  But this is an amazing choir, and we are 100% capable of this project.  Let's put in the time and effort to perform this music well and have a great concert!  I believe in us.

Please, let me know if you have ANY questions.  My email is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and my phone number is (805) 407-5855.  Contact me with any questions at anytime.  I'm usually awake.

Determined, Daniel

P.S. - Thank you SO SO SOOOO much to everyone who came to my recital.  It meant the world to have my Zimriyah family represented at this concert.  You are all an important part of my life, and it was a joy to share my recital with you.  Much love to you all.

4) Schoenberg's Gurrelieder;

5) Schoenberg's Schein Uns; and

Rand said that the concert at Temple Emanuel went well. Cantor Lizzie has invited the choir back next year.

[LAZC] Sad news about one of our friends

It is my sad duty to inform you of the recent death on Thursday morning of Daniel Chaney, one of our longtime tenor ringers.  Dan fought long and valiantly against cancer and even had to withdraw at the last minute from last year's Temple Emanuel concert in which he was scheduled to join us due to a relapse.  He had a wonderful voice, a great spirit and a lot of courage. He shall be missed.   He was 49 years old.

[LAZC] Start time of Dress Rehearsal on April 12

Hi Everyone, It was brought to my attention that the second day of Pesach which is a Yom Tov for traditional Jews does not end until 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday evening as the result of daylight savings time.  Accordingly, I have requested and been granted by Temple Emanuel the opportunity to begin our dress rehearsal at 8:00 p.m. rather than at 7:00.  Please plan to arrive for dress rehearsal at 8:00 p.m. instead of 7:00 on April 12.  We should be done by 10:00 p.m.  Temple Emanuel is located at the corner of Burton Way and Swall Drive in Beverly Hills. [LAZC] Thanks and your reward

Thanks to everyone who braved the elements and the horrendous traffic to shlep down to Santa Ana for the concert on Saturday evening. Although we performed with a skeleton crew (12 singers absent), I think that we sounded great.  As a reward for your efforts, we will NOT be rehearsing on Thursday evening, March 2.

We will resume rehearsals the following Thursday evening, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Sinai Temple in preparation for our next concert which will take place on Friday evening, April 14, 2017 at Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills.  Nick will send out a list of the music to bring on March 9.

Hi Robin,

Just wanted to let you know, I had my total hip replacement surgery on Friday.  I'm home recovering.  Happy to let everyone know, now that I know it's happened.  I'm not recovering quickly enough to participate in choir for the time  being, so I will have to miss the upcoming concert. :-(

Anyway, I didn't want to leave you hanging without any info. Miss you guys!

Love,

Dorine

[LAZC] today's news

Notes from January 26 LAZC rehearsal

Our next concert is February 25th at the Discovery Science Center located off the 5 freeway in Santa Ana. Thanks to Michael Palmer and a friend for arranging the gig, and thanks to Nick for creating the program.

The theme of the concert is “The Science of Music.” It will be a combination lecture and demonstration. Call time is at 6:00 p.m. The concert will start at 7.

Here is the order of the music (* indicates pieces we sang in the January 21 concert):

1. Gregorian chant (Men)

2. Sumer Is Icumen In, edited by John Henry Fowler.

3. Psalm 42, Nick Page*

4. Fugue for Tin Horns* (Men)

5. Quaerite primum, regnum Dei - Mozart

6. Instrumental - Purcell

7. Schein uns du liebe Sonne - Schonberg

8. PIrkei Avot - Strimple

9. Geographical Fugue - Toch and/or the last movement from Elijah - Mendelssohn

10. Hallelujah - Rossi

11. Torah Tzivoh, ending of Part 2 of Bloch Sacred Service

12. We and the audience will improvise a piece

13. Zion’s Walls*

14. Jolly Tar & Milkmaid*

15. South Pacific Medley*

For those who could not attend the rehearsal and would like to catch up before next week, we practiced numbers 2, 5, 7, 9, and 11.

Nick will probably cut 2 pieces from this list.

Choir members will get comp tickets for the concert but not to the museum itself.

There will be an extra rehearsal on Tuesday Feb. 21 at the usual time at Sinai.

FYI the Schonberg concert will be on Thursday evening May 25 and the extra rehearsal will be the night before. This information will be repeated at future rehearsals.

Nick said the Jan. 21 concert at Temple Beth Am was “terrific.” His colleague liked Viglid very much. We will repeat this piece at the June concert.

Robin is away and I am replacing her for a couple of weeks.
